A Message from our President
Welcome to the APWU Local 692's website!
During our April 2002 union meeting those attending gave the go ahead to set up this site as an additional forum to share information with our membership. This site is a work in progress and any ideas from the members will be appreciated.
Our organization represents approximately 175 employees who work for the
United States Postal Service in Champaign, Illinois. Thank you for
visiting our site.
LOCAL 692 SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants are restricted to sons and daughters, legally adopted children, or stepchildren of active or deceased APWU Local #692 members. The member must have been in good standing with the APWU for a total of at least five years immediately preceding this application, or the five years preceding the death of the member. In the case of members who have not worked for the USPS for five years, he/she must have been a member of the APWU Local #692 for at least two years.
Each applicant must have graduated from an accredited high school within the current year and must make application for these benefits before June 30 of the award year.
The A.C.T. composite score of the student applying shall be used and the student with the highest composite score shall be declared the winner. Each applicant is required to submit a typewritten essay on "Unionism" to be eligible. In case of a tie in scores, the APWU Local#692 executive board will vote on the best essay as the tiebreaker.
The scholarship applicant must have applied and have been accepted at an accredited college of his/her choice prior to awarding of the scholarship money and the award will be sent directly to the college. The name of the college should be given to the scholarship committee as soon as possible. If the winner/s fail to attend said college in the award calendar year, the award will be forfeited.
An award winner may not accept more than $18,000 annually from other scholarships. If it exceeds this amount, the money must be returned to the APWU Local #692 upon demand.
1st place winner shall be awarded $1500.00
2nd place winner shall be awarded $1000.00
3rd place winner shall be awarded $500.00
If there are less than three applicants, the awards will not be combined.
The Local #692 treasurer will notify all recipients of their award no later than July 15 of the award year. Scholarships must be used for tuition towards the pursuit of an undergraduate degree.
The committee will be appointed by the President. No person related to any applicant may be on the committee. Their duties are:
1) Assess all applications, list in order of score, and present to the Vice-President.
2) In case of a tie score, winners will be decided by executive board decision.
The scholarship committee will send congratulations letters to the winner's, advising them of their award, and reminding them of their responsibilities. When notified of the colleges by the winners, the committee will immediately give that information to the treasurer so that a check can be written. The committee will send the checks and letters to the colleges, and also a letter to the winners notifying them of the date the scholarship money was sent to their college.
